Adventure in Interlaken: Paragliding, Lakeside Walks, and Jungfraujoch
If there’s one place in Switzerland that truly deserves the title of “adventure capital,” it’s Interlaken.
Perfectly nestled between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, this town is surrounded by mountains, glaciers, and endless opportunities for outdoor thrills.
Whether you’re floating through the sky, hiking along turquoise lakes, or riding a cogwheel train up to the “Top of Europe,” Interlaken is the kind of place that makes you feel alive.
Here’s how I spent my time in Interlaken and why it became one of my favorite stops on my Switzerland trip.
Why Visit Interlaken, Switzerland?
The name literally means “between lakes,” and Interlaken couldn’t be better placed. On one side lies Lake Thun, deep blue and ringed with castles; on the other, Lake Brienz, known for its unreal turquoise color.
Behind it all loom the giants of the Bernese Alps, the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. For me, Interlaken was the perfect base: adventurous by day, relaxing by evening.
Morning: Paragliding Over the Alps
If there’s one bucket-list activity you can’t miss here, it’s paragliding over Interlaken and usually takes 2–3 hrs with transfers.
Standing in the meadow at Höhematte Park, I watched dozens of colorful parachutes float down gracefully, and I knew I had to try it.
After a quick drive up to the launch site above town, my guide strapped me in, gave me a few instructions, and suddenly we were running toward the edge. Within seconds, the ground dropped away and I was soaring.
Below me, I could see both lakes shimmering in the sunlight, the rooftops of Interlaken, and snow-dusted peaks in the distance.
The whole flight lasted about 15–20 minutes, but it felt timeless with equal parts adrenaline and serenity.
👉 Tip: Book in advance during summer. Flights usually cost around CHF 150–180, and photos/videos can be added.
Afternoon: Free Time, Lakeside Strolls & Harder Kulm
Back on solid ground, I used the afternoon for a mix of free time and exploring. You can choose between riding the funicular up to Harder Kulm for panoramic views or a lakeside walk.
Harder Kulm
In just 10 minutes on the funicular, I was at Interlaken’s “house mountain,” standing on a glass viewing platform over the valley. From here, both lakes glowed below, framed by the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Sunset was magical.
Lake Brienz (Brienzersee)
Its surreal turquoise water is unforgettable. I strolled the lakeshore path and even hopped on a short cruise from Interlaken Ost, passing by the storybook village of Iseltwald.
Lake Thun (Thunersee)
Larger and deeper, it felt more dramatic, especially with castles like Oberhofen and Spiez on its shores.
👉 Tip: If you only do one, pick Harder Kulm for the views. For something slower, go with a lakeside walk or cruise.
Evening: Dinner by the Lakes
After a day of adrenaline and exploring, the evening was all about slowing down. I found a spot overlooking Lake Thun, where the sunset reflected gold on the water, though lakeside restaurants on Lake Brienz offer equally beautiful views.
Dinner here can be as traditional as bubbling cheese fondue or as simple as fresh fish by the lake. Either way, the setting makes the meal unforgettable.
Overnight: Interlaken
I stayed overnight in Interlaken, the perfect base for more adventures in the Bernese Oberland. From here, you’re well-placed for day trips to Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, and even Jungfraujoch.
Day Trip to Jungfraujoch – The Top of Europe
One of the most popular day trips from Interlaken is the train journey to Jungfraujoch, known as the “Top of Europe.” At 3,454 meters (11,332 ft), it’s the highest railway station in Europe and an experience that feels like stepping into another world.
The ride itself is part of the adventure, you’ll pass through Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald, switch at Kleine Scheidegg, and then board the Jungfrau Railway, which climbs through tunnels inside the Eiger.
👉 Tip: Go early in the morning and check the weather, clear skies make all the difference. This trip takes most of the day, so plan it separately from other activities.

Final Thoughts – Why Interlaken Belongs on Your Switzerland Itinerary
Interlaken is more than just a stop between trains, it’s a playground for nature lovers and thrill seekers.
From paragliding above the Alps to cruising on turquoise lakes and standing at the Top of Europe, my time here was equal parts exhilarating and peaceful.
