Why the Patagonia Black Hole 40L Duffel Bag is a Must-Have When Traveling
As an avid traveler, I’m always on the lookout for gear that enhances my journeys. For the past few trips, I’ve been using my Patagonia Black Hole 40L Duffel Bag and Briggs & Riley 22-inch Baseline Essential Carry-On. Whether you’re a frequent flyer, a weekend warrior, or someone who loves spontaneous adventures, this bag is a game-changer. Here’s why the Patagonia Black Hole 40L deserves a spot in your travel arsenal.
Durability That Withstands the Elements
The Patagonia Black Hole 40L is built to endure the rigors of travel. Made from 100% recycled body fabric, lining and webbing, and recycled TPU-film laminate, this duffel is designed to protect your gear from rain, snow, and rough handling.
Perfect Size for Versatile Use
At 40 liters, this duffel hits the sweet spot between ample storage and portability. It’s spacious enough to hold everything you need for a weekend getaway or a short business trip, yet compact enough to fit in overhead compartments and under seats. This makes it an ideal carry-on bag for airplanes, saving you the hassle and cost of checking in luggage. Plus, the bag can be compacted down into its own pocket, making it easy to store when not in use.
Smart Organization
The Black Hole 40L features a thoughtfully designed interior and exterior that makes packing a breeze. The main compartment is roomy, with a large zippered opening for easy access. Inside, you’ll find mesh pockets that help you keep small items organized and visible. The exterior zippered pocket is perfect for stashing items you need quick access to, like travel documents, snacks, or your phone.
Comfortable Carry Options
Travel can be tiring, and having comfortable carry options is crucial. The Patagonia Black Hole 40L comes with padded shoulder straps that convert it into a backpack, allowing for hands-free convenience. Additionally, it has reinforced haul handles and removable shoulder straps, giving you multiple ways to carry it comfortably, depending on your preference and situation.
Sustainable Choice
Patagonia is renowned for its commitment to sustainability, and the Black Hole 40L duffel is no exception. It’s made from 100% recycled polyester, aligning with the company’s ethos of reducing environmental impact. By choosing this bag, you’re supporting a brand that prioritizes eco-friendly practices.

Functionality doesn’t mean compromising on style. The Black Hole 40L comes in a variety of colors and features a sleek, minimalist design that looks good no matter where your travels take you. Its distinctive look sets it apart from typical travel bags, making it both a practical and fashionable choice.

How to Compact the Patagonia Black Hole 40L Duffel Bag
Step 1: Empty out your duffel bag and unzip both of the pocket zippers
Step 2: Put duffel bag flap inside against the side of the bag
Step 3: Pull the two side handles and the long sides of the bag should accordion down. Be sure the pocket is on top
Step 4: Flip the bag over and attach/button up the two main straps
Step 5: Fold the two sides towards the center. If present, try to follow the crease when folding up the bag. Be sure when folding up the sides that the width is less than the actual width of the pocket, as shown above. (The black sides are less than the teal pocket.)
Step 6: Fold up the black portion of the bag and be sure when folding it up it’s smaller than the actual pocket itself
Step 7: Compact the top portion of the bag down towards the center
Step 8: Turn the pocket inside out, while covering the folded up section of the bag. This may require a little bit of force
Step 9: (Optional) Place backpack straps inside the bag
Step 10: Zip up both of the zippers
